In 48 B.C., Cleopatra, the fabled queen of Egypt, was ousted from power by generals who realized they couldn’t control her, so instead, they made her brother the sole monarch of Egypt. But when a Roman army led by Julius Caesar arrived soon after, she arranged for Caesar to receive the most famous gift in history: a rolled-up oriental carpet with the 22-year-old queen inside. Cleopatra got Caesar’s help regaining her throne and became his lover. But her luck in love ran out when Caesar was assassinated and her second Roman lover, Mark Antony, died in her arms after losing a great battle. Rather than face the wrath of the new Roman emperor, Cleopatra committed suicide.
