"If you don’t get any fun out of acting itself, it’s a very superficial thing”
The Scot Ewan Mcgregor is without a doubt one of the cutest actors at this moment. But still, his name doesn’t always immediately ring a bell. And that’s because he looks a little different every time, which makes him sometimes kind of unrecognisable. In New York he tells about his latest film: Down With Love.
While in Central Park the New York people enjoy the sun, it’s very crowded in the hotel where the interviews with the cast of Down With Love take place. The interviews take longer than expected for unknown reasons. During our wait an English filmcrew stumbles in. It has been following Ewan McGregor for a few days now. The assistent-producer tells the journalists the actor is so very fantastic. “He’s patient and answers every question”, she says with an impressive dialect, continuing with mentioning indignantly that there’s been a journalists who dared to ask him if there was a spark between him and Renee Zellweger. “So disrespectful. The man is married!”.
With a delay of one hour and a half we are led into different rooms. And fifteen minutes later the Scottish actor steps into the room. His face “says” fun. With his sky blue eyes he looks happily into the room. His hair is natural again – redish blond- and he has a scrappy beard: a little more than two days no shaving, a little less than a real beard. An immens tattoo peeks through from under his sleeve. The message is clear: Ewan McGregor loves his wife and kids. In a dramatic heart the names of the members of his family are written: Eve, Clara and Esther.
KameleonI
It’s almost difficult to imagine that this mischievous boy can also be a very caring house father, but Ewan McGregor is a man of many faces. It’s also just the thing that characterizes him.
People with superficial interest in films sometimes don’t even know him. That’s what you get when you pick different roles every time, in films of a different kind and on top of that regurarely changes your looks. Compare the McGregor in Trainspotting with the one in Moulin Rouge. Or the one in Velvet Goldmine with the one in Brassed Off. They could at best be distant cousins.
In Down With Love Ewan McGregor is a Rock Hudson Look-a-like: smooth black hair finished with a killer-smile. Is he aware of his kameleonesc appearane? “You’re so kind”, the actor feigns modesty, “Ah well, you know, it’s my job. It simply comes down to the fact that you try to be someone else. One doesn’t easily find two of teh samen characters in different films, unless ofcourse you’re doing a sequel. I’m not the kind of person that plunges into a character for weeks. I just surrender myself to the script. There are great stories about Alec Guinness who searched for a particular kind of shoe, a matching pair of trousers and than worked his way up for a part. I’ve never done that kind of thing. I try to understand who my character is. I don’t really think too much about how I’m going to play him. That’s the beauty of acting for me: you don’t alway know in advance what you’re going to do”.
Little brat
And so Ewan McGregor also didn’t practice his Bond-like smile with which he manoeuvres through Down With Love. “The last thing I think about is what my face is doing. I remember I had to do a lot of ‘smiling-takes’ for my first acting job. I developed a nervous spasm, you know, like you’re posing too long for a photograph. I asked my uncle, who’s also an actor, what I could do about it. He said: you’re probably thinking about the smiling itself instead of something that makes you smile. He was right”.
When Ewan McGregor was a little brat his uncle was already in the business. He’s one of the reasons he became an actor himself. Was the job in the end what he expected it to be?
McGregor: “I sometimes wonder if I would have been an actor had my uncle done something else. I think I woulde have been. I love the job. I cannot think of something right now I don’t like about it. Even giving interviews for four days....In the first place it’s about acting for me, for the camera or for an audience. The rest you have tot do to support that. You give interviews to make people go see your films, and to make sure you get another chance to be in front of the cameras. There are actors who ect to become famous. That can be very disappointing. If you don’t get any fun out of the acting itself, then it’s an empty and superficial thing. I love it to makle people laugh in these hectic times. To make them forget about there troubles for a couple of hours because they’re looking at you. Or that you can make people change their view on things”.
The actor also says he hasn’t got one type of role on his mind, but that he does have a thing for soldiers. “I was very happy to be in Black Hawk Down. On the set of a Life Less Ordinary I became friend with a guy that took care of the requisits. He had been in Vietnam for eightteen months and told incredible stories about it. He’s only a few years older than me and he had fought and killed people...I couldn’t imagine myself being in that kind of situation. Fascinating. My brother is fight pilot with the RAF. He’s just flown to Saudi-Arabia. I don’t think there is a bigger difference thinkable than that between an actor and a soldier. I used to work in a parking lot. My colleague was an old men who had fought in the second World War. It was crazy: the only times he spoke of something with passion, was when he talked about that war. The rest of the time he was just a miserable old bastard. That war had probably been his most emotional experience of his life”.
Whether it’s the role of a soldier or that of a shy home town boy, Ewan McGregor seems to play everything with the same ease. What makes him say “yes”to afilm?
“I’ve always said it’s about the story, but I don’t think that’s true. It’s more that I want to do a film because of what’s playing in my head when I read the script. What the script does with my imagination, that’s what matters to me. The first reading is very important. I don’t think it would work if I read it in a crowded bus for the first time. But let’s be honest, I never am in a crowded bus. Let’s face it!” The actor laughs genuinely at his own joke and continues: “You know what I mean”.
Fairytale-dressing
The next big project is Big Fish, a film by Tim Burton about the bond between a father and a son. “It was such a great story”, McGregor says, “That father has always told big stories about his life and the son get’s the feeling he doesn;t know his father. The son tries to find out who his father really is, whle his father keeps telling these outrageous stories. I play the father in the stories, the young father. And Albert Finney is the old father. It’s no fantasy, but the real life with a fairy-tale dressing on it. Gorgeous stuff to play. I remember reading the script. I had two hours time before meeting Tim Burton for the first time. My wife had already read the script. She came in just when I finished the last page. What did you think, she asked. I didn’t answer. O, you didn’t like it, she said. But that wasn’t it. I was so touched I couldn’t talk. My throat was shut”.
Fortunately mister Mc Gregor wasn’t experiencing that this afternoon. You can indeed ask him anything. A little sidestep to the happy family then. Do his daughters realise by now that they have a famous father? Clara is seven, Esther will be two this november. Ewan McGregor smiles. “The oldest does. She sees how people react to me when I take her to school. But I have always been careful about it. When she was about four years old I explained to her what kind of work I do. I took her to a theater one afternoon, when there was no one there. She got to sit in the audience while I stepped onto the stage and told her that I did that also in the evening with a group of friends. And that we told a story then and acted it. Then I showed her. After that she got on the stage and did the same. Then she got it. She also understands that it’s not true when people say: your father is Obi Wan Kenobi in Star Wars. She knows I’m only playing him. She’s quite cool about it”, he says not without pride. And laughing he continues with jet again another anecdote.”When we are in America, we always let her tell people she knows the queen. She goes along with it perfectly. I told her she should say that we drink tea on a regular basis at the king’s, but only on tuesday afternoons. And she does that without batting an eyelid. Recently she took it somewhat further and said I was the son of the king. I thought that was fantastic. My being an actor isn’t very special to her. A prince, that would have been really great. You see. I don’t have to worry at all”.

das dachte ich eben auch immer."Ach, das ist so'n Junge der zaubern kann und Kriminalfälle löst."
